NAPOLEON SOLO STARS IN THE EXPLOSIVE AFFAIR !!!

Gold Key Comics did come out with a great print run for The Man from U.N.C.L.E. tie-in comic book series. I am so glad to be able to present posts from this fun comic book series. This was one of my favorite TV series and comic books while I was growing up. I loved the photo covers and back cover pin-ups.

I also grew up reading all of their adventures in hardcover and paperback, however, the only one I don't recall reading was the children's storybook. You know what, come to think about, there was The Final Affair (by fan favorite author David McDaniel) I finally came across not long ago that I have yet to read.

It thrilled me to no end when the complete series DVDs came out, in a sweet collector's attache case packaging. Yes!

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. #1  Spies! Guns! Intrigue!
"The Explosive Affair"
Even Napoleon Solo needs some time for rest and relaxation, so when a beautiful young woman named Daphne invites him to go water skiing, the hard-working secret agent eagerly accepts her offer. But what Solo doesn't know is that this innocent-seeming boating day will lead to another escapade of international intrigue.
After Daphne tries to lead Solo directly into a floating explosive mine, he and director Waverly suspect she may be working for Thrush, the international terrorist organization bent on world domination.
Later clues found at the London flat of Solo's old friend Tubby Finch lead him straight into the middle of a secret Thrush operation off the coast of West Africa.
But can Solo and Illya Kuryakin survive the voodoo magic of the Mag Mag Witch Doctors working for Thrush?
Written by Paul S. Newman (Yellow Submarine) with art by Don Heck (Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea).

Loved the back cover pin-ups!
Unfortunately, these comic book affairs have not been reprinted outside the Gold Key series, so I've been going back and recollecting the series.

Additionally, there was a lot of marketing to go along with the TV series. Just in the field of publications, there was a great paperback series from Ace Books, a digest series (with notable authors such as John Jakes, Dennis Lynds & Bill Pronzini), a Big Little book (by George S. Elrick), a couple of young adult books (by Brandon Keith), children's storybook (written by Walter Gibson, of The Shadow fame) and a terrific trade paperback (by Jon Heitland) all about the wonderful television show.

I'll be touching on those as well as I do my series of blogs.

Thank You!

  1. This is the sort of comic Heck was meant to draw; Sekowsky was pretty good too. I was a huge UNCLE fan. Did you get the Topp's Fan Magazine that included "the Shark Island Affair"? Great stuff.

  2. Some of the pages of the comic seem to be out of order. I read the UNCLE books as a teen (a friend of my mother's gave them to me) and loved them. In fact, I had never actually watched the TV show until a couple of years ago. I've also just recently been reading the comic books. Don Heck may not be as flashy as some artists, but I think he's a pretty good storyteller and an underestimated comic book artist.

  3. Great to see all these old comics here on your blog. My son managed to find me an old Man From U.N.C.L.E. annual in an Edinburgh charity shop a couple of years ago. A very rare treat.
